Chain gun destroys boat, tracer rounds show what happens when you shoot at open water

US Sailors demonstrate the awesome power of the Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) and Mk-38 25 mm chain gun in this exhibition video.

The Mk38 is the naval version of the M242 double-loaded electric drive cannon that can be mounted on anything from a patrol boat to an aircraft carrier.

Firing from the Amphibious Assault Ship USS America (LHA 6), the sailors target small moving targets in low light conditions.

As an added bonus, the tracers show exactly what happens when rounds are fired with a relatively flat trajectory toward a body of water. Like high velocity skipping stones, the misses fly wildly after ricocheting off the surface of the waves.
