Closer look at a timeless classic, the M1 Carbine

Hickock45 is back with a timeless classic from WWII, the M1 carbine.

Designed in the late 1930s, the M1 was a standard firearm used throughout the US Military in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. While the M1 Garand was a formidible weapon, it was also heavy. U.S. Army Ordnance wanted something light wight that could be easily carried by support troops like mortarmen and radiomen. The M1 carbine was their answer.

Weighing half as much as the full sized Garand or the equally hefty Thompson submachine gun, the M1 was as nearly as mobile as a handgun but with greater range and firepower. Paratroopers quickly began carrying this rifle and a folding stock version was developed.

With a .30 caliber round, the M1 has a maximum range around 300 yards, but severe bullet drop limited its effective range to around 200 yards. Its intended use was for close-range or defensive combat.
